32X CD-ROM Drive

Toshiba Introduces 32X-max Family of CD-ROM Drives; High-Performance Drives Available with SCSI-2 and ATAPI Interfaces.

32X drives available in three different configurations: internal SCSI-2-interface, external SCSI-2-interface and internal ATAPI-interface.
Leading performance with 85ms average random access time.
CAV spin speeds from 13.8X to 32X resulting in fast transfer rates of 2,070Kbps - 4,800Kbps.
Toshiba Intros 32X CD-ROM Drives IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 27, 1997 - Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Disk Products Division today introduced the XM-6200 Series CD-ROM drives, the most advanced CD-ROM drives on the market today. Available in three different models, the drives offer high-performance combined with industry-leading access times and transfer rates up to 32X. The family of drives include the XM-6202B internal ATAPI-interface drive, the XM-6201B internal SCSI-2-interface drive and the XM-6201F1 external SCSI-2-interface drive.
Highest Performance Available in Three Configurations "This new suite of products provides the ultimate CD-ROM performance in a variety of popular configurations," said Maciek Brzeski, optical business unit director, TAIS DPD. "Plus, with three model types, our customers will have leading performance with the drive that fits their exact needs."

Fast Access Times to Data Toshiba designed the XM-6200 Series of drives for PC OEMs and end-users requiring the fastest CD-ROM drive on the market. All three drives, the XM-6202B, XM-6201B and XM-6201F1, provide leading performance with 75ms average random seek and 80ms average random access times. "The industry-leading access and transfer rates make the XM-6200 Series drives ideal for today's power users who want the highest performance available," added Brzeski.

Fast Transfer Rate is Payoff of Constant Angular Velocity The drives employ Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) disk rotation for rapid data transfers from any place on the disc. With the constant rotation speed of CAV, the drives are able to read the inner and outer tracks of data on the CD-ROM without the latency delay of speed changes. The result is the XM-6200 Series' leading transfer rates ranging from 2,070Kbps at 13.8X on the inner tracks to 4,800Kbps at 32X on the outer tracks. "These high-performance drives deliver seamless video, faster data access and improved game playing," added Brzeski.

Burst Transfers for Fastest Data Transfer; Cache for Optimized Transfers To deliver maximum performance, the new drives support fast burst transfer rates. The XM-6202B supports a burst transfer rate in PIO mode 4 of 16.7Mbps. The XM-6201B and XM-6201F1 provide synchronous burst data transfer rates of 10Mbps. Data transfer is further optimized through a 256KB cache.

Drive Designed for Multimedia Applications The XM-6200 Series of drives fully meet the demands of today's multimedia applications. The drives are MPC-3 compliant and support both multisession Photo CD and CD-EXTRA. The drives can also read CD-ROM XA, CD-DA, CD-I, CD-I Ready, CD-I Bridge, Video CD, CD-G, CD-RW, and CD-R disc formats.

Active Wide Range System and Digital Servo Control are Key to High Performance and Reliabilty Toshiba designed the drives using several proven technology innovations to deliver optimum performance. The XM-6200 Series employs Toshiba's proven Active Wide Range playback system and digital servo control. The Active Wide Range playback system allows the drive to read data at +/- 80 percent of a specific rotational speed - allowing the drive to access data on the disc and deliver data faster than ever available before. This improvement allows users to begin accessing their data almost instantly. The digital servo control, which offers greater precision in tracking and head positioning, further contributes to performance and reliability, and ultimately, to the drive's highly-reliable 100,000 MTBF rate.

Designed for User Convenience The XM-6200 Series drives were designed with user convenience in mind. The drives include a tray-loading mechanism with a media-removal prevention function that ensures CDs cannot be ejected during read operations. Also, for integration and set-up flexibility, the drives may be mounted horizontally or vertically. Finally, for configuration with today's popular computer systems, the drives are Plug-and-Play compatible.

Dimensions, Weight and Operating Specifications The new XM-6202B and XM-6201B internal drives measure 41.5mm x 146mm x 190mm [1.62in (h) x 5.69in (w) x 7.41in (d)] and weigh only 0.9kg [1.98 pounds]. The XM-6201F1 external drive measures 68.5mm x 246.38mm x 254mm [2.7in (h) x 9.7in (w) x 10in (d)] and weighs only 1.5kg [4.0 pounds]. The drives' power consumption is a low 0.5 watts standby and 6.9 watts average. The drives may be used in temperatures ranging from 41-122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pricing and Availability Average street prices for the drives are estimated at: $129 for the XM-6202B, $149 for the XM-6201B and $199 for the XM-6201F1. These drives are available in mid-November, 1997.
